The easiest way to understand porcelain as a material is to consider two groups, porcelain tiles and non porcelain tiles.

Porcelain Tile is Popular

One of the reasons porcelain tile is so popular is largely due to the way it’s manufactured, the manufacturing process produces a really strong, durable tile that is also incredibly versatile. Porcelain tile is considered stronger and more durable than the non porcelain variety and for this reason have become more popular with home owners over the last couple of years. Ordinary ceramic tile is not as strong and durable as porcelain tile and will be slightly more absorbent than porcelain is.

Porcelain tile has a low absorbency rate and will not scratch and stain easily which makes them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms where tiles should always be versatile, strong and durable.

Many believe that porcelain tiles do not come in a wide variety of colors and designs and for the most part this is true, however porcelain tiles do offer quite a range of colors and designs and are a popular tile for the durability they offer home owners. Porcelain tiles are one of the more expensive tiles but when you consider the advantages of having a good solid tile material that will last the test of time, porcelain tile costs are worth it.

How Porcelain Tile is Made

Porcelain tiles are made from clay, much the same as other tile materials but the clay used is incredibly pure, other materials are also used together with the pure clay such as sand and all this produces incredibly strong and durable wall tiles and floor tiles.

The clay based material is heated at extremely high temperatures and left to dry for far longer than many other tile materials, this is what produces and enhances porcelain tiles.  The way porcelain tiles are manufactured produces a tile that has a very low absorbency rate and for this reason porcelain tiles are ideal for outdoor applications.

Porcelain tiles will not be damaged when exposed to moisture and frost and will maintain their appearance.

Porcelain Tile is Idea For..

Porcelain tiles are ideal floor tiles in both bathrooms and kitchens and will wear well in high traffic areas. The most important aspect of floor tiles is choosing a material that will withstand many years of high traffic and still look good, for this reason porcelain tiles are so popular. Porcelain tiles will often be found in many commercial settings such as supermarkets and big shopping centers where the traffic levels are extremely high.  They are chosen because they will wear extremely well and will not have to be replaced for many years.

Although porcelain tiles are restricted somewhat to the design and style choices they offer, there are still some really great designed tiles and home owners should take the time to look at the different options available to them.
